What Is the Seishun 18 Kippu?
The Seishun 18 Kippu is Japan's best-kept budget travel secret — a pass offering 5 days of unlimited travel on all JR local and rapid trains nationwide for just ¥12,050 (¥2,410 per day). Despite the name suggesting youth ('seishun' means youth, '18' references the ticket), anyone of any age can use it. The catch: it only covers local (futsu) and rapid (kaisoku) trains — no shinkansen, no limited express, no reserved seats. This means slow travel, but the entire JR network of 20,000+ km opens up for exploration at an unbeatable price.
Tip: The 5 days do not need to be consecutive — use them any 5 days within the validity period. One ticket can even be shared among up to 5 people traveling together on the same day.
When You Can Buy and Use It
The Seishun 18 Kippu is only available during three seasonal windows: Spring: Buy Feb 20-Mar 31, use Mar 1-Apr 10. Summer: Buy Jul 1-Aug 31, use Jul 20-Sep 10. Winter: Buy Dec 1-Dec 31, use Dec 10-Jan 10. Purchase at any JR station ticket counter (midori-no-madoguchi) or major ticket machines. It is a single paper ticket with 5 date stamps — the station staff stamps one box per day of use. Cannot be bought online. Not available to tourists outside these windows — plan accordingly.
Tip: If you only need 3-4 days, sell unused stamps on ticket resale sites or look for partially-used tickets at discount ticket shops (kinken shoppu) near stations.
Best Routes for the Seishun 18
Tokyo to Osaka (8-9 hours via Tokaido Line): The classic route, passing through Atami, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, and Nagoya. Start early (6 AM) to arrive by afternoon. Tokyo to Sendai (6 hours): Scenic Tohoku Main Line through rice paddies and mountains. Okayama to Matsuyama (via Shikoku): Cross the Seto Ohashi Bridge for stunning Inland Sea views. Osaka to Hiroshima (5 hours): Sanyo Line along the coast. Full traverse: Tokyo to Hakata (Fukuoka, 16+ hours): For extreme budget travelers — doable in one very long day starting at 5 AM.
Tips for Comfortable Travel
Bring food and water — local trains lack dining cars and some stretches are 2+ hours between major stations. Download offline maps (signal is patchy in rural tunnels). Cross-platform transfers: At connection stations, trains on the other platform often depart within minutes — have your route planned. Use Yahoo Transit Japan app or Jorudan with the 'Seishun 18 Kippu' route filter to find local-only connections. Window seats on the ocean side offer stunning views on coastal lines. Station benches are your friend — brief waits between connections are part of the charm.
Limitations and Workarounds
Cannot use on: shinkansen (any type), limited express (tokkyuu), private railways (non-JR). Exception: You CAN ride JR-operated sections of trains that cross onto private railway tracks by paying the private portion separately. Miyajima ferry: The JR ferry from Miyajima-guchi to Miyajima island IS covered (the only JR ferry). Night trains: If a train crosses midnight, you can stay on until the first stop after midnight without using a second day's stamp (unless you exit and re-enter). For long gaps between local trains in rural areas, consider combining with short shinkansen segments by paying the express supplement (¥1,000-3,000) for that portion only.
