When to Take a Taxi in Japan
Japanese taxis are safe, clean, metered, and driven by professionally uniformed drivers — but expensive. Use them for: late-night rides after trains stop (midnight-5 AM), reaching restaurants or ryokan not near stations, traveling with heavy luggage, groups of 3-4 splitting fares, or when lost and exhausted. Base fare starts at ¥500-710 (varies by city) for the first 1-2km, then ¥80-100 per 200-300 meters. A typical 10-minute ride costs ¥1,000-2,000. Late-night surcharge (10 PM-5 AM): 20% extra in most cities. Tokyo to Shinjuku from Tokyo Station: approximately ¥2,000.
Tip: The rear passenger door opens and closes automatically — do not touch it. Stand back and wait for the driver to operate it. Pulling it manually can damage the mechanism.
How to Hail and Ride
Look for taxis with a red light in the windshield (available). Green/blue light means occupied. Wave at the curb or find a taxi stand (marked with signs at stations and hotels). Do not open the door — it opens automatically. Show the driver your destination on Google Maps (address in Japanese) or a hotel business card. Drivers rarely speak English but are excellent navigators. Pay by cash (prepare exact change or small bills) or IC card/credit card (look for stickers on the door showing accepted payment). No tipping — it confuses drivers.
Tip: Save your hotel's address and phone number as a screenshot. Taxi drivers can call the hotel for directions if they cannot find it — this is common practice.
Taxi Apps: Book Without Speaking Japanese
GO (formerly JapanTaxi + MOV): Japan's #1 taxi app. Set pickup and destination in English, see fare estimate, pay by card in-app. Works in all major cities. S.RIDE: Popular in Tokyo, slick interface, fast pickup in central areas. Uber Japan: Limited availability — works in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto but dispatches regular taxis (not private cars) at standard metered rates. DiDi: Chinese-owned, works well in urban areas. All apps show estimated fare before booking. During peak times (Friday night, rain, events), wait times increase to 10-20 minutes.
Special Taxi Services and Flat Rates
Airport flat rates: Fixed fares between airports and city zones. Haneda to central Tokyo: ¥5,000-7,000 depending on ward. Narita to central Tokyo: ¥20,000-24,000 (expensive — use trains unless splitting 4 ways). JPN Taxi: Universal design vehicles (Toyota Sienta-based) with wheelchair ramps, luggage space for 4 bags, and sliding doors. Increasingly common. Hire taxis (charter): ¥5,000-8,000/hour for sightseeing tours with a driver. Useful for rural areas or elderly travelers. Shared taxis: NearMe app offers airport shared rides at ¥3,000-5,000 per person.
