When Renting a Car Makes Sense
Japan's trains cover cities brilliantly, but a car unlocks rural Japan: Hokkaido's vast landscapes, Kyushu's coastal drives, Shikoku's mountain valleys, Okinawa's beaches, and the Japan Alps. Rent a car when exploring: areas with infrequent buses (rural onsen, mountain temples), multiple scattered attractions in one day, traveling as a group of 3-4 (splitting costs beats train tickets), or carrying ski/dive equipment. Avoid driving in cities — Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto have nightmare traffic, expensive parking (¥500-3,000/hour), and excellent public transport.
Tip: Rent from the nearest major train station in rural areas rather than airports — station branches are cheaper and let you combine train + driving efficiently.
License Requirements
You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention — obtain it in your home country before traveling (not available in Japan). Countries including USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and most of Europe qualify. Important: If your country uses the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP (Belgium, France, Germany, etc.), you need a separate Japanese translation of your license instead — available from JAF offices in Japan (¥4,400, same-day). The IDP is valid for 1 year from issue or the duration of your stay (whichever is shorter). Always carry both your IDP AND original license.
Rental Companies and Costs
Toyota Rent a Car: Largest fleet, newest cars, English-capable GPS, from ¥5,500/day for a compact. Nippon Rent-A-Car: Wide network, good prices, English support. Times Car Rental: Budget-friendly from ¥4,400/day, frequently discounted. Orix Rent a Car: Competitive rates, airport locations. Budget/ToCoo!: English-language booking platform aggregating Japanese companies, often cheapest. Typical costs: Kei car (tiny, great on fuel): ¥4,000-5,500/day. Compact (Yaris, Fit): ¥5,500-8,000. Standard (Corolla): ¥7,000-12,000. All include basic insurance. Booking via English sites (tocoo.jp, rentalcars.com) is easiest.
Insurance and Extra Costs
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is included in base rental price but has a deductible of ¥50,000-100,000. NOC (Non-Operation Charge) — if the car is damaged and cannot be rented out during repair, you pay ¥20,000-50,000. Buy the NOC waiver (¥1,100-2,200/day) for complete peace of mind. Highway tolls: Expensive — Tokyo to Osaka costs ¥10,000+ via expressway. Rent an ETC card from the rental company (¥330/day) for automatic toll payment and 30% weekend/holiday discounts. Fuel: Fill up before returning (same as worldwide) — 'mantan' means full tank. Regular gasoline: ~¥170/liter.
Driving Tips for Japan
Japan drives on the left (same as UK, Australia). Speed limits: 30-40 km/h in cities, 60 km/h on regular roads, 80-100 km/h on expressways. Traffic laws are strictly enforced — cameras everywhere. Parking: Never park on streets in cities (you will be towed within hours). Use coin-operated lots (¥100-300/20 min). GPS navigation speaks English on major rental cars — enter phone numbers of destinations for precise guidance (Japanese addresses are notoriously confusing). Drink-driving limit is 0.03% BAC (essentially zero) — penalties include jail time. Winter: studless tires are mandatory in snowy areas (specify when booking).
