Day 1: Sapporo Arrival
Tip: If visiting in February, the Sapporo Snow Festival fills Odori Park with enormous ice sculptures and attracts 2 million visitors over one week.
Day 2: Otaru and Shakotan
Tip: Otaru's sushi uses Hokkaido seafood landed that morning — the uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe), and crab are noticeably fresher than mainland Japan.
Days 3-4: Furano and Biei
Tip: Lavender peak is mid-July. Outside this window, Farm Tomita still has flowers (spring through autumn) but the lavender fields specifically are dormant.
Day 5: Asahikawa and Asahiyama Zoo
Tip: The penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo (winter only, December-March) is the highlight — penguins waddle freely through crowds of visitors on a 500m path.
Days 6-7: Hakodate
Tip: Go up Mt. Hakodate for sunset rather than full dark — watching the city transform from daylight to glittering lights is more dramatic than arriving after dark.
