江之岛一日游:海岛、海滩与绝美海景

Getting to Enoshima

Enoshima is about 70 minutes from central Tokyo. The fastest route: Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Katase-Enoshima (¥640, 70 min direct on rapid express). Alternatively, JR to Fujisawa then Enoden tram to Enoshima (covered by JR Pass to Fujisawa). The island connects to the mainland by a 600-meter bridge (Benten Bridge) — walkable in 10 minutes. The Enoshima 1-Day Pass (¥1,000, called 'eno-pass') covers the island's escalators, Samuel Cocking Garden, and Sea Candle tower — worthwhile since the island is hilly.

Tip: Visit on a clear winter day for the best chance of seeing Mt Fuji from the island — summer haze usually obscures it.

Shrines & Sea Caves

Three Enoshima Shrines (collectively Enoshima Jinja) dot the island at ascending levels, dedicated to three sea goddesses. The climb through torii gates passes souvenir shops and food stalls. At the island's far end, the Iwaya Caves (¥500) are sea-eroded caverns where Kobo Daishi and other monks meditated. You explore them by candlelight, descending stone steps to see Buddhist statues and a dragon sculpture. The caves are atmospheric but slippery — wear good shoes. The path along the cliff face to the caves has dramatic ocean views.

Tip: The Iwaya Caves close during rough weather and high seas — call ahead (0466-22-4141) if waves look heavy, or check at the island's tourist office.

Sea Candle Tower & Gardens

The Enoshima Sea Candle (¥500, or included in eno-pass) is a 60-meter observation lighthouse at the island's highest point. On clear days, views extend to Mt Fuji, the Shonan coast, and even the Izu Peninsula. The surrounding Samuel Cocking Garden (¥200, combo with tower ¥750) is a tropical botanical garden on the site of a Victorian-era garden built by British trader Samuel Cocking in 1882. At night (winter illumination season, November-February), the tower and garden are lit with thousands of lights — a popular date spot.

Tip: Sunset from the Sea Candle tower facing west toward Mt Fuji is one of the Kanto region's most romantic views — arrive 30 minutes before sunset for positioning.

Beaches & Seafood

The Shonan coast flanking Enoshima has sandy beaches popular from June to August when beach houses (umi no ie) set up temporary bars and restaurants on the sand. Yuigahama and Kugenuma beaches are the main stretches. Outside summer, the seafood remains excellent year-round. Enoshima's specialty is shirasu (whitebait) — tiny translucent fish served raw (nama-shirasu, ¥1,200) or dried on rice bowls. Tobiccho on the island is the most famous spot. Grilled turban shells (sazae, ¥500) are sold at harbor stalls.

Tip: Nama-shirasu (raw whitebait) is banned January-March for conservation — visit April-December for the prized raw version, or try dried (kamaage) year-round.
