在日本锁国时期（1641—1853年）的两个多世纪里，长崎港内这座小巧的扇形人工岛——出岛（Dejima）——是日本与西方世界之间唯一的交流通道。荷兰东印度公司的商人们被限定在岛上活动，不得随意离开。自1996年起，出岛经历了大规模复原工程，如今已有25座江户时代的历史建筑重现于世，包括仓库、商馆长官宅邸和日本守卫所等。岛上的互动展览生动呈现了西方的科学、医学、植物学与艺术，如何借由这座小岛悄然渗入日本，使出岛成为世界历史上一处独一无二、令人深思的遗迹。
