Why Okinawa Is a World-Class Dive Destination
Okinawa's subtropical waters (22-29°C year-round) host over 400 coral species and 1,600 fish species — biodiversity rivaling the Great Barrier Reef. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 meters. The archipelago stretches 1,000km from subtropical reefs near Taiwan to temperate waters near Kyushu, offering everything from manta ray encounters to WWII wreck diving. Most dive sites are within 5-30 minutes by boat, and the infrastructure is excellent — hundreds of dive shops operate in English. Tip: The best visibility (40m+) occurs March-May before summer rains. Manta season peaks September-November at Kerama Islands and Ishigaki.
Best Dive Sites: Main Okinawa Island
Blue Cave (Ao no Dokutsu): Iconic cave near Cape Maeda where sunlight creates an electric blue glow. Suitable for snorkelers and beginners. Crowded — go early morning. Sunabe Seawall: Shore entry, coral gardens, nudibranchs, and pipefish. USS Emmons: WWII destroyer at 35-45m depth — advanced divers only. Manza Dream Hole: Dramatic underwater cliff with a cathedral-like cave opening at 30m. Gorilla Chop: Easy shore dive near Motobu, excellent for night diving with octopus and lobster. Kerama Islands: Crystal Waters
The Kerama Islands (30-50 min by boat from Naha) offer Japan's clearest water — 50m visibility is not uncommon. Tokashiki Island: Turtle encounters are almost guaranteed at Aharen Beach reef. Zamami Island: Manta rays from September and humpback whales (January-March, snorkel/boat viewing). Aka Island: Pristine coral coverage, pygmy seahorses, and mandarin fish. Day-trip diving from Naha is convenient (¥18,000-25,000 for 2-3 dives with transfers), or stay overnight on the islands for a more relaxed pace. Water temperature: 22-24°C in winter (5mm wetsuit), 28-29°C in summer (3mm or rashguard).
Ishigaki and Miyako: Remote Paradise
Ishigaki: Famous for manta ray encounters at Manta Scramble (90%+ encounter rate September-November). Also exceptional coral gardens, Napoleon wrasse, and sea turtles. 1-hour flight from Naha. Yonaguni (near Taiwan): Hammerhead shark aggregations (January-March) and the mysterious underwater 'ruins' — carved rock formations at 25m that may be ancient human-made structures. Miyako Island: Cave diving capital of Japan — spectacular cavern systems with light beams. 'Ant Room,' 'L-shaped Arch,' and 'Twin Caves' attract experienced divers worldwide. Many sites are shore-entry.
Practical Information for Divers
Certification: Many Okinawa shops offer PADI Open Water courses in English (3-4 days, ¥50,000-65,000). Discover Scuba Diving (try dive) from ¥10,000. What to bring: Certification card, logbook, own mask/computer if preferred. Full rental gear available everywhere (¥3,000-5,000/day). Season: Year-round diving, but typhoon season (June-October) can cancel trips — have flexible dates. No-fly rule: Wait 18-24 hours after diving before flying — plan dive days at the start of your Okinawa trip. Decompression chambers: Available in Naha and Ishigaki.
