The Horikiri Pass (Horikiri-toge) on National Route 218 in northern Miyazaki Prefecture is one of Kyushu's most rewarding autumn scenic drives, connecting the coastal city of Nobeoka to the highland town of Takachiho through a dramatic series of forested mountain ridges. In early to mid November the road is canopied by beech, maple, and oak trees turning gold and crimson, creating tunnel-like corridors of colour. Several lay-bys and viewing platforms provide stopping points with sweeping views over the Gokase River valley below draped in autumnal hues. The drive is equally popular with road cyclists seeking a challenging and beautiful mountain route.
