Yanagawa, known as the 'Venice of Kyushu', holds its Sagemon Matsuri each spring to mark the traditional Girls' Day (Hinamatsuri). Elaborate hanging ornament mobiles called sagemon—each made of 51 handcrafted decorations—are displayed in shop fronts and along the canals. Visitors drift through the city's historic waterways on flat-bottomed donko boats poled by boatmen in traditional dress, passing willow trees and ornament-draped buildings.
