The Yanagawa Hina Nagashi is the centrepiece of Yanagawa's month-long Hinamatsuri season, held in the city known as the 'City of Water' for its extensive network of historic canals dug in the Edo period. In the Hina Nagashi ceremony, a priest-led boat floats elaborate hina dolls downstream on the canals to carry away misfortune, while spectators line the banks and watch from traditional don-ko-bune flat-bottomed boats. Throughout February and March, thousands of colourful sagemon hanging ornaments — traditional regional Girl's Day decorations — festoon merchant houses, restaurants, and cultural facilities along the canal banks. The combination of water reflections, antique architecture, and handcrafted sagemon creates an atmosphere unique to Yanagawa.
