Yamaguchi's Tanabata Chochin Matsuri transforms the city's shopping arcades into glowing tunnels of more than 10,000 hanging paper lanterns (chochin) on the nights of August 6th and 7th. Unlike the bamboo-and-paper-streamer version of Tanabata common elsewhere, Yamaguchi's version is fiery and intimate, with orange and red lanterns creating a warm amber glow through the city streets. The festival is also held on August 6th as a memorial observance, giving the celebration a quiet layer of reflection alongside its festive spirit.
