The Usuki Stone Buddhas (Usuki Sekibutsu), designated Japan's first National Treasure among stone sculptures, comprise over 60 Heian-period carvings hewn directly from cliff faces in four clusters. Each November the site hosts an illumination event where hundreds of candles and lanterns cast a warm golden glow over the ancient faces, attracting photographers and pilgrims alike. The surrounding rural valley setting, rich with autumn foliage, adds to the deeply contemplative atmosphere.
