Usuki Fireworks Festival (Usuki Hanabi Taikai)

Usuki · Oita · Kyushu

Usuki, a beautifully preserved historical castle town in southern Oita, hosts a summer fireworks festival on the shores of its sheltered bay. The combination of the historic whitewashed merchant townscape, the ruins of Usuki Castle on the promontory, and shimmering sea reflections creates a uniquely atmospheric setting. Usuki is famous throughout Japan for both its UNESCO-recognised stone Buddha carvings (Usuki Sekibutsu) and its premium fugu (pufferfish) cuisine, and festival food stalls offer an introduction to local specialities. The relatively intimate scale of the event (around 4,000–5,000 shells) keeps the focus on quality over quantity.
