The SL Yamaguchi, a lovingly preserved steam locomotive running between Shin-Yamaguchi and Tsuwano, is perfectly timed to coincide with the cherry blossom season in early April. Arriving in Tsuwano station amid clouds of steam and falling petals, passengers step into a well-preserved castle town where sakura line the moat of the Tsuwano Castle ruins and the white-walled samurai district. The hillside castle ruins offer panoramic views over the town's cherry-blanketed valley, accessible by chairlift. Combining heritage rail travel with hanami makes this one of the most romantic and memorable spring experiences in the Chugoku region.
