Listed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of Japan's Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festival culture, the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival is held on 1–2 May at Kanayana Shrine in Takaoka. Seven ornate, two-storey yatai floats—each weighing several tonnes—are pulled through the old town by teams of townsfolk, their roofs decorated with intricate wood carvings and their upper decks housing elaborate automated karakuri mechanical puppets that perform short theatrical scenes. The festival traces its roots to the city's founding by Maeda Toshinaga in 1609, and the craftsmanship of the floats reflects Takaoka's centuries-old heritage as a centre of bronze casting and lacquerware. Evening illuminations of the floats create an especially atmospheric spectacle.
