While Lake Toya is famous for its summer long-run fireworks, the winter edition is a quieter, more intimate affair — launched nightly from October through late April over the caldera lake, visible from onsen hotels lining the southern shore. The combination of fireworks reflecting on the near-still lake surface, snow-capped Usu volcano silhouetted in the background, and the steam of outdoor baths creates one of Hokkaido's most memorable winter evenings. Most lakeside hotels position their rotenburo (outdoor baths) to face the nightly display. Duration is approximately 20 minutes per night.
