Towada Art Center and its surrounding Kanchogai Arts Street host a series of illumination events through the winter season, when the city's renowned permanent outdoor sculptures are dramatically lit against snow-covered surroundings. Works by international artists including Yayoi Kusama, Ron Mueck, and Yoshitomo Nara are visible year-round but take on an ethereal quality beneath winter light installations. Evening illumination programmes on selected dates add projection mapping and coloured lighting to the pedestrianised avenue. The combination of world-class contemporary art and pristine Tohoku snowscapes makes this a distinctive cultural winter experience.
