Tenryū Gorge (Tenryukyō), carved by one of Japan's three most powerful rivers, offers one of Chubu's latest autumn foliage experiences, with maples peaking on the lower slopes from late November into early December. Traditional flat-bottomed pleasure boats depart from Tenryūkyō station and drift 4 km downstream through canyon walls adorned with crimson and orange foliage. The boatmen narrate local legends and point out natural rock formations along the route, adding storytelling depth to the visual spectacle. Visitors can return by train along the scenic Iida Line, which follows the river through continued forested colour.
