Tenjin Matsuri, held at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, is considered one of Japan's three greatest festivals alongside Gion Matsuri and Kanda Matsuri. The two-day celebration on 24–25 July culminates in a spectacular river procession where more than 100 traditional boats carrying festival participants and portable shrines glide along the Okawa River at dusk. Thousands of fireworks are launched simultaneously, reflecting off the water to create a breathtaking double display. The festival has roots stretching back over a thousand years to the mid-Heian period.
