Tanabe City Fireworks Festival (田辺花火大会)

Tanabe · Wakayama · Kansai

Tanabe City on the Wakayama coast serves as the southern gateway to the Kumano Kodō pilgrimage routes, and its annual summer fireworks festival pairs spectacular pyrotechnics with one of Japan's most spiritually significant landscapes. The display is launched over Tanabe Port, with shells visible from the seafront, harbour piers and hillside vantage points overlooking the Pacific-facing bay. Roughly 3,500 fireworks are used, including water-surface starmine rafts that scatter golden willow trails across the bay's surface. The festival coincides with the Obon season, lending the event a contemplative, ancestral atmosphere alongside the celebration.
