Takeda Castle Ruins, perched at 353 metres on a mountain summit in Asago, Hyogo, earned the nickname 'Machu Picchu of Japan' for the way its stone walls appear to float above a sea of clouds on autumn and spring mornings. During early April, cherry trees scattered among the 400-year-old stone ramparts bloom against sweeping panoramas of the Maruyama River valley below. The hike to the summit takes around 40 minutes and rewards visitors with an intimate, adventurous hanami setting far removed from city parks. Sunrise visits are especially prized when cloud inversions are forecast, combining the spectacle of mist-shrouded ruins with the delicacy of spring blossoms.
