Mount Takao (Takao-san), just an hour from Shinjuku, celebrates its famous koyo season with the annual Momiji Matsuri held throughout November. Approximately 10,000 maple trees line the six hiking trails and the cable-car route, peaking in mid-November with rich scarlet and orange hues. The festival features stalls selling local craft beer, Japanese sweets, and roasted chestnuts at the mountain base, while Yakuō-in temple on the summit path provides a spiritual focal point draped in autumn foliage. The mountain was rated one of the world's most visited by Michelin, and autumn rivals spring in crowd appeal.
