Sumida Park's cherry blossom festival traces a lineage back to Edo times when the eighth Tokugawa shogun planted cherry trees along the Sumida River in the 18th century. Today roughly 600 cherry trees line both banks between Asakusa and Mukojima, framed spectacularly by the 634-metre Tokyo Skytree. The festival period brings food stalls, boat tours on the Sumida River, and night-time illuminations to the area. The combination of historic Asakusa temple culture and modern skyline makes this one of Tokyo's most photographically distinctive hanami locations.
