The Shimonoseki Kaikyō Fireworks Festival is one of the most dramatic in western Japan, launching several thousand shells directly above the Kanmon Strait that separates Honshu from Kyushu. Giant tankers and ferries passing through the strait provide an extraordinary industrial counterpoint to the bursting fireworks above. Karato Market — Japan's most celebrated fugu (blowfish) market — serves as a gathering point, with seafood stalls and taiko performances before the show. Viewing is possible from Mimosusogawa Park and also from Moji Port across the strait in Fukuoka Prefecture.
