The Shimanto River, often called 'Japan's last clear stream', is famous for its 22 traditional chinkabashi submerged bridges—low, railing-free wooden crossings designed to disappear harmlessly below flood waters. In late November the riverside willows, maples, and broadleaf forest covering the flanking hills turn warm amber, yellow, and ochre, reflecting in the river's famously clear water. Cycling along the Shimanto River Cycling Road links several of the most scenic chinkabashi in a half-day route, with rental bikes available in Shimanto City. Local cuisine highlights along the route include freshwater ayu, eel, and snapping turtle, anchoring the experience in authentic Tosa food culture.
