Sandankyō Gorge in Akiota Town is one of Japan's 100 Famous Gorges and arguably the most spectacular autumn scenery in Hiroshima Prefecture. A well-maintained 8 km trail winds past a series of waterfalls, suspension bridges and turquoise pools flanked by towering maple and beech forests. Peak colour typically arrives in late October, often earlier than the city, rewarding visitors with vivid oranges and reds against white cascading water. The gorge is most easily reached by bus from Hiroshima city.
