Saga City Fireworks Festival (Saga-shi Hanabi Taikai)

Saga · Saga · Kyushu

Held each August along the Kase River on the outskirts of Saga City, this hanabi taikai is the prefecture's most-attended outdoor summer event, drawing around 150,000 visitors. Professional pyrotechnic companies from across Kyushu compete to produce the most elaborate sequences, with music-synchronised segments and massive 10-inch shells among the highlights. The flat terrain of the Saga Plain allows for unusually wide launch spreads, and the reflections in the slow-moving river amplify the spectacle. The nearby hot-air balloon field—Saga hosts Japan's largest balloon festival in autumn—adds a distinctive local character to the surrounding venue.
