Rurikō-in is a privately owned villa and sub-temple of Jōdo-ji in the Yase area of northern Kyoto, opened to the public only during spring and autumn special viewing periods. The upper study room's low black lacquered desk creates a near-perfect mirror reflection of the blazing maple canopy outside, producing one of Japan's most shared koyo photographs. The meticulously landscaped moss garden and strolling pond garden are equally stunning under autumn colour. Visitor numbers are managed, so the atmosphere remains calm and contemplative despite the site's viral fame.
