The Ozu Summer Festival fireworks are launched from the banks of the Hiji River, with Ozu Castle and the famous Garyu Sanso villa silhouetted against the bursting shells overhead. Ozu is often called the 'Little Kyoto of Ehime' for its preserved Edo-period streetscapes, which form an enchanting backdrop to the modern pyrotechnic show. Cormorant fishing (ukai) boats sometimes light the river with torches on the same evenings, creating a layered spectacle of old and new.
