Oze National Park, straddling the borders of Gunma, Fukushima, Niigata, and Tochigi prefectures, contains Japan's largest highland marsh (Ozegahara) and one of its most beloved spring spectacles: the mass flowering of mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage). Wooden boardwalk trails traverse the wetland at 1,400 metres altitude, passing through carpets of white spathes reflected in still pools against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The park is also renowned for its summer nikko kisuge (daylily) blooms and autumn foliage. Day hikes from the Hatomachi-toge or Tokura trailheads are manageable for most fitness levels.
