Mount Oyama (1,252 m) has been a pilgrimage destination since the Edo period and rewards autumn visitors with some of Kanagawa Prefecture's most spectacular koyo scenery. The cable car from Koma Station lifts passengers through an increasingly dense maple canopy before disembarking at Afuri Shrine's lower precinct, where vermilion torii gates contrast dramatically with the scarlet foliage. Continuing on foot to Oyama-dera temple and the summit reveals panoramic views across the Sagami Plain to Sagami Bay. The pilgrim town of Oyama-machi at the base is lined with tofu restaurants using local spring water.
