Owara Kaze no Bon

Toyama (Yatsuo district) · Toyama · Chubu

Held from 1–3 September in the mountain village of Yatsuo, Owara Kaze no Bon is widely considered one of Japan's most aesthetically refined folk festivals. Performers dressed in yukata and straw hats that shade their faces dance slow, melancholic choreography through the village lanes to the mournful sound of shamisen and kokyu fiddle, honouring ancestors and praying for protection from autumn typhoons. The event draws around 200,000 visitors over three nights, yet the narrow stone-paved streets retain an intimate, almost ethereal atmosphere—especially when mist rolls down from the surrounding Ecchu mountains. Arriving by reserved train is recommended as road access to Yatsuo is severely restricted during the festival.
