Often called the 'Gion Matsuri of the Lake,' Otsu Matsuri is a grand autumn festival centered on Tenmangu Shrine in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, featuring 13 spectacular dashi (festival floats) that are paraded through the city streets. What makes the floats extraordinary is their decoration with rare 17th-century Flemish and Chinese tapestries acquired through the Silk Road trade, a testament to Otsu's historical wealth as a major commercial hub on Lake Biwa. Each float also features mechanical karakuri puppets that perform during the procession. The festival has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
