Held on the southern edge of Lake Biwa, the Otsu Festival Fireworks is a separate lakeside display distinct from the larger Biwako Hanabi, typically taking place in mid-August and drawing tens of thousands to Otsu's lakefront promenade. The wide, flat expanse of the lake creates a spectacular natural mirror, doubling the visual impact of each burst. The event is accompanied by food stalls lining Otsu Port and occasional traditional music performances. Otsu is easily reached from Kyoto in under ten minutes by JR Biwako Line, making it an ideal day-trip extension.
