Dating to 1733, the Sumidagawa Hanabi Taikai is held on the last Saturday of July and is one of Japan's largest fireworks displays. Two competing launch sites — between Sakurabashi and Kototoi Bridge, and near Komagata Bridge — send approximately 20,000 fireworks into the sky over about 90 minutes. Viewing spots along both banks fill with millions of spectators in yukata, and reserved grandstand seats offer premium views of the elaborate starmine and colour-changing shells.
