Sagicho Matsuri, Omihachiman (左義長まつり)

Omihachiman · Shiga · Kansai

The Sagicho Matsuri in Omihachiman, held on the Saturday and Sunday closest to March 15th at Himure Hachimangu Shrine, is one of Japan's most visually unusual festivals. Local neighbourhood groups construct towering sagicho floats—bizarre and beautiful sculptures made entirely from natural foodstuffs such as dried persimmons, squid, calligraphy brushes, and straw—that are paraded through the old merchant-town streets. On Sunday evening the floats are ceremonially burned in a dramatic bonfire ritual that purifies the new year and ensures a good harvest. The event reflects the deep merchant culture and wit of Omihachiman's historic townspeople.
