Omagari National Fireworks Competition (Omagari Zenkoku Hanabi Kyogi Taikai)

Daisen (Omagari) · Akita · Kanto

Held in Omagari, Daisen City in Akita Prefecture, this event is technically in Tohoku but is heavily attended by Kanto-based travellers as a premium day-trip or overnight excursion accessible by Shinkansen. As one of Japan's three great fireworks competitions and the oldest competitive hanabi event in the country, it draws over 70 competing teams and 800,000 spectators annually. The two-hour programme over the Omono River features jaw-dropping creative set pieces, giant 30-inch shells, and a grand finale of simultaneous multi-team launches.
