Okutama Lake, Tokyo's largest reservoir, is ringed by steep forested mountains that explode in autumn colour from late October. The Mubara Trail and the famous Mukashi-Michi historic pathway allow walkers to follow the lakeshore and river valley beneath canopies of maple, oak, and zelkova trees. Several pedestrian suspension bridges offer elevated views over the turquoise water and surrounding hills. The area retains a wild, remote character despite being within two hours of central Tokyo by the JR Ōme Line.
