Lake Okutama (Okutama-ko), the largest lake within Tokyo Metropolis, provides a spectacular water-level perspective on the surrounding Okutama mountain foliage each October and November. Rental rowboats and guided kayak tours allow visitors to glide across the glassy surface surrounded by 360-degree walls of blazing deciduous forest reflected in the deep blue reservoir water. The Mugiyama suspension footbridge above the lake's western arm is a prime elevated viewing platform, and the nearby Okutama Mukashi Michi hiking trail traces the old aqueduct path through crimson maple stands. Access via the JR Ōme Line makes this a rewarding day trip from central Tokyo.
