The Cape Zanpa Eisa Night is a smaller, atmospheric Obon-season festival held on the dramatic coastal cliffs of Zanpa-misaki in Yomitan. Local Eisa groups perform the traditional ancestor-welcoming and spirit-sending dances against the backdrop of the illuminated Zanpa Lighthouse and the dark East China Sea. The cliff-top setting gives the event a raw, spiritual quality that larger stadium events cannot replicate. Performers beat large taiko and smaller paaranku frame drums as sparks from handheld torches drift toward the ocean in the warm summer night.
