Yanbaru National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in northern Okinawa, shelters one of Japan's last great subtropical broadleaf forests. From November into December, certain deciduous species including the native Okinawan oak and Ryukyu beech-relative species add warm tones to the otherwise evergreen canopy. Licensed eco-guides lead small-group treks through the Aha River valley and Hiji Waterfall trails, explaining endemic wildlife such as the Okinawa rail and Yambaru kuina. The forest's remoteness ensures an uncrowded, genuinely wild autumn experience.
