Beppu's summer fireworks festival is staged along the seafront of Beppu Bay, with the city's signature columns of onsen steam drifting across the display to create an ethereal, uniquely atmospheric scene. Approximately 5,000 shells are launched from a barge moored offshore, giving the entire bay front an unobstructed view. The event is timed to coincide with peak Obon season, when the streets are already alive with yukata-wearing visitors relaxing between onsen soaks. Waterfront viewing spots fill up fast, so early arrival is strongly recommended.
