The Oirase Stream, flowing 14 kilometres from Lake Towada to Yakeyama, is one of Japan's most beloved autumn foliage corridors. Roughly a dozen named waterfalls and cascades punctuate the moss-covered basalt riverbed, each framed by maples, oaks, and Japanese beeches turning every shade from yellow to deep scarlet. A flat, well-maintained footpath and a parallel cycling route allow visitors to travel the full length of the gorge at a leisurely pace. Peak colour usually arrives mid-October, slightly earlier than lower-elevation spots, and photography conditions are ideal on overcast days when colours appear most saturated.
