Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge, Iya Valley

Miyoshi · Tokushima · Shikoku

The Iya Kazurabashi is a National Scenic Treasure bridge constructed from shirakuchi-kazura vines, rebuilt every three years using traditional methods unchanged since the feudal era. Spanning 45 metres at 14 metres above the Iya River, the swaying, gap-planked walkway is as thrilling as it is ancient. The surrounding Iya Valley is one of Japan's three great hidden regions, renowned for deep gorges, thatched farmhouses, and dramatic autumn foliage. A second bridge, the Oku-Iya Niju Kazurabashi, lies further upstream for adventurous visitors.
