Nopporo Forest Park, designated a national forest and home to the Hokkaido Museum, spans over 2,000 hectares of native broadleaf forest between Sapporo, Ebetsu and Kitahiroshima. In mid-to-late October the canopy of Japanese elm, Mongolian oak and vine maple creates a dense tunnel of gold, amber and red along its 50+ km of walking and cycling trails. The park is one of the few places near Sapporo where visitors experience undisturbed primeval Hokkaido forest in full autumn colour. The Hokkaido Museum's terrace café provides a comfortable rest stop amid the trees.
