The Niyodo River, celebrated for having some of the clearest and most intensely blue water in Japan, flows through forested hills in Kochi Prefecture that burst into autumn colour in late October. Guided canoe tours depart from operators near Ino Town, paddling downstream through shallow rapids and past riverside maple groves. The contrast between the river's legendary ultramarine colour and the warm reds and yellows of the overhanging trees is extraordinary, and tour operators supply all equipment including drysuits for cooler conditions. Some half-day packages include a riverside grilled ayu fish lunch and access to a traditional Tosa washi paper-making workshop.
