The Kirishima Mountains are home to the Miyama Kirishima, a wild azalea species native to this volcanic highland that blankets the slopes around Ebino Kogen and the Kirishima crater lakes in brilliant red-pink blooms each late April and early May. The Kirishima Azalea Festival marks the peak blooming season with guided trekking events, photography contests, local craft and food markets showcasing Kagoshima and Miyazaki specialities, and outdoor performing arts at Ebino Plateau. The dramatic backdrop of steaming volcanic vents, emerald crater lakes, and flower-covered ridgelines makes this one of Kyushu's most photogenic spring gatherings. The event is jointly celebrated across the Kagoshima–Miyazaki prefectural border.
