Narai-juku Nakasendō Post-Town Autumn Walk

Shiojiri (Narai) · Nagano · Chubu

Narai-juku, located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, is one of the best-preserved post towns along the historic Nakasendō highway, boasting an unbroken kilometre of original Edo-period merchant houses, inns, and lacquerware shops. In autumn, maple and ginkgo trees lining the main street and surrounding forested hills burst into crimson and gold, dramatically enhancing the already atmospheric townscape. Unlike its more famous neighbour Magome-Tsumago, Narai offers a quieter, more authentic experience with fewer crowds. Traditional lacquerware (Kiso-nuri) shops, sake breweries, and small cafés operating from historic buildings complete a full half-day itinerary.
