Nara Park's 660 hectares of open parkland, ancient temples, and shrines transform into a vivid tapestry of red, orange, and gold each November, with over 1,200 wild sika deer wandering beneath the coloured canopy. Particularly striking spots include the path from Tōdai-ji's Nandaimon Gate, the grounds of Kōfuku-ji's five-storey pagoda, and the forested hillside of Kasuga Taisha. The combination of world-heritage architecture, free-roaming deer, and autumn foliage is unique to Nara and makes for extraordinarily photogenic scenes. Night illumination events at Tōdai-ji and Kōfuku-ji add a dramatic dimension after dark.
