Held each August as part of Nara's summer festival calendar, the Wakakusayama Fireworks display launches shells from the famous grass-covered hillside overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage zone of Nara Park. The iconic backdrop of Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha Hall and Kōfuku-ji's five-storey pagoda, silhouetted against bursting colour, creates one of the most culturally layered fireworks views in Japan. Roughly 5,000 fireworks are discharged over 40 minutes and can be watched from Nara Park's open lawns, where deer graze undisturbed amid the crowds. The event pairs naturally with an evening lantern walk through the park's stone lantern-lit pathways.
